The wisdom of one word

August 19th, 2010

Isn’t it amazing how one person, sharing one idea, at the right time and place can change the course of your life’s history? This is certainly what happened in my life. When I was 14, I was hitchhiking from Houston, Texas, through El Paso on my way to California. I was following my dream, journeying with the sun. I was a high school dropout with learning disabilities and was set on surfing the biggest waves in the world, first in California and then in Hawaii, where I would later live.

Upon reaching downtown El Paso, I met an old man, a bum, on the street corner. He saw me walking, stopped me and questioned me as I passed by. He asked me if I was running away from home, I suppose because I looked so young. I told him, “Not exactly, sir,” since my father had given me a ride to the freeway in Houston and given me his blessings while saying, “It is important to follow your dream and what is in your heart, Son.”

The bum then asked me if he could buy me a cup of coffee. I told him, “No, sir, but a soda would be great.” We walked to a corner malt4 shop and sat down on a couple of swiveling stools while we enjoyed our drinks.

After conversing for a few minutes, the friendly bum told me to follow him. He told me that he had something grand to show me and share with me. We walked a couple of blocks until we came upon the downtown El Paso Public Library.

We walked up its front steps and stopped at a small information stand. Here the bum spoke to a smiling old lady, and asked her if she would be kind enough to watch my things for a moment while he and I entered the library. I left my belongings with this grandmotherly figure and entered into this magnificent hall of learning.

The bum first led me to a table and asked me to sit down and wait for a moment while he looked for something special amongst the shelves. A few moments later, he returned with a couple of old books under his arms and set them on the table. He then sat down beside me and spoke. He started with a few statements that were very special and that changed my life. He said, “There are two things that I want to teach you, young man, and they are these:

“Number one is to never judge a book by its cover, for a cover can fool you.” He followed with, “I’ll bet you think I m a bum, don t you, young man?”

I said, “Well, uh, yes, I guess so, sir.”

“Well, young man, I’ve got a little surprise for you. I am one of the wealthiest men in the world. I have probably everything any man could ever want. I originally come from the Northeast and have all the things that money can buy. But a year ago, my wife passed away, bless her soul, and since then I have been deeply reflecting upon life. I realized there were certain things I had not yet experienced in life, one of which was what it would be like to live like a bum on the streets. I made a commitment to myself to do exactly that for one year. For the past year, I have been going from city to city doing just that. So, you see, don’t ever judge a book by its cover, for a cover can fool you.

“Number two is to learn how to read, my boy. For there is only one thing that people can’t take away from you, and that is your wisdom.” At that moment, he reached forward, grabbed my right hand in his and put them upon the books he d pulled from the shelves. They were the writings of Plato and Aristotle-immortal classics from ancient times.

The bum then led me back past the smiling old woman near the entrance, down the steps and back on the streets near where we first met. His parting request was for me to never forget what he taught me.

frugal

August 11th, 2010

Back in the days of the Great Depression, knowing how to be frugal was a necessary virtue. Although some today believe that being frugal is analogous to being ‘cheap’, or Scrooge-like, this is really not the case. My dictionary defines frugal as, 1. not wasteful; thrifty and 2. inexpensive or meager. No one wants to be wasteful, especially with food and resources. Being thrifty is sometimes viewed as synonymous with cheap, perhaps only because many younger people interpret this as an old fashioned word. Learning how to be frugal, that is, not wasteful, is now coming back in vogue!

This current economic downturn demands that we cultivate a frugal lifestyle, making the most of our assets and buying power. If you’re new to the frugal scene, here are a few easy ways to get the most for your money, while not significantly impacting your lifestyle. The most painful steps might be eating out less frequently, or cutting back on a few TV channels you never watch anyway.

Utility costs are through the roof. In better times, most of us didn’t think too much about turning off the heat, lights, TVs or computers when not in use. Just by forming a few new habits and getting family members to buy into the strategy you can save big dollars every month on your energy consumption. Another big time saver is in the laundry room. Avoid doing those small loads whenever possible. Fill the machine. Clean out the lint compartment after each use. Insulate your water heater. Inspect weather stripping for leaks. While the microwave is a convenient appliance, it does eat up gobs of electricity. As appropriate, use the stove top more frequently. Taming that utility bill is an important first step in learning how to be frugal.

What You Might Not Know About OCD

July 13th, 2010

Many people suffering from OCD will not seek help even if they have known for a long period of time that they have a problem. Since therapy is a crucial part of treating OCD, this is detrimental to the person’s healthy life.

It can be hard to find a professional that has an insight and understanding of OCD that also has the strength to keep you moving forward.

Once you find a qualified professional, you will not get full benefit of their help unless you follow their advice. If you have questions, make sure you have them answered to your satisfaction and understanding. Once you are aware and understand what is expected of you, you will need to trust that person well enough to follow their instructions. Give the therapist feedback; while you are not a therapist, you are the only person that truly knows how the therapy is affecting you. Your therapist may not fully understand the effects of OCD because they’ve never had it; however, they have been trained to a certain extent and their interaction with you will allow them to tailor their therapy to your needs.

Olympic-style sports competition

June 29th, 2010

The competition is a key part of the Government’s plans to generate a lasting sporting legacy from hosting the London 2012 Games and to make sporting opportunities available to everyone.

Plans
Stage 1: Up to £10 million of lottery funding, distributed by Sport England, creates a new sports league structure for primary and secondary schools.

Stage 2: From 2011, schools compete against each other in local leagues; winning athletes and teams qualify for up to 60 county finals.

Stage 3: The most talented young athletes are selected for the national finals.

Stage 4: The national finals are held in the run up to the London Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012.

Stage 5: The ambition is for the competition to continue after 2012.

Schools will also be encouraged to host in-house Olympic-style sports days so that children of all abilities have the opportunity to compete. There will be a Paralympic element at every level of the competition for young people with disabilities.

The value of competition
“I want to give a real boost to competitive sport in schools using the power of hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games to encourage young people – whatever age or ability – to take part in this new competition,” said Jeremy Hunt, Secretary of State for Culture, Olympics, Media and Sport.

“Competitive sport – whether you win or lose – teaches young people great lessons for life. It encourages teamwork, dedication and striving to be the best that you can be.”
